I do have a big question though. As a white father in a mixed race family of Latinos, what do I say to them? An elderly white man tried to attack their grandmother in her business because he didn’t want to pay sales tax, yelling that he voted for Trump so that he wouldn’t have to pay taxes to “people like her”. My wife (their mother) is scared to take them places, the verbal attacks and open hostility toward her have been getting steadily worse since last summer. She has never had a problem fighting ignorance, but is trying to set a better example for them, and does not want them to be scared. She told me yesterday that she wants to move back to California to be near her family as she does not feel safe out in public on her own. What do I tell them, what do I tell her? How do I help them feel safe in Trump’s America?
