I wrote this last week, the day before Clinton’s campaign spot with the kids. It’s gotten worse. The “lock her up” chants at the RNC convention are sickening. And now Trump’s favorite military radical – a retired US Marine – is calling for Hillary’s execution. It’s getting tougher and tougher to “temper” my words and “open” my heart, as the president requested.

The message is lost on them but, to your point, the fervor and reception is not. I imagine this to be the case with a lot of Trump’s fan base. A dangerous ideal cloaked in star-spangled spectacle and delivered on the wings of rabid nationalism might seem, on the surface, the team one would want to be on. At this age, I am just trying to steer my kids clear of the “us vs. them” way of thinking. Team humanity is a global franchise. Thanks for writing this and good luck to us all.
